Rained Out

The rain began almost immediately after the festival parade ended. One of our favorite groups was performing at the public library and we decided to go there first then head to the festival grounds. We ended up staying at the library until four as they had performances back to back but mainly because it allowed us to stay out of the rain.

At the festival grounds things were a mess. Muddy puddles of water, people sitting on tarps or covering themselves with them, skirts and pants stained dark with mud and rain knee down. But spirits were high among the few hundred that stuck it out despite the weather and the show continued on the covered stage. At one point in the afternoon they almost evacuated the grounds because of flash flood warnings.

Raphael and I listened to the music until about 7 pm from a distance under an awning and got our fill of dancing.

Back at our campsite things were far from cheery. I pulled out the tarp from under the tent as it was collecting rain water that pooled underneath, and made other adjustments. Luckily our bedding remained dry. We went to bed at 8 pm and stayed warm and dry while the rain continued all night long.  The creek below now sounds like a roaring river.

I'll soon have to leave this cozy nest as its now light outside and my bladder is bursting. It is 6:10 am. I don't relish packing up the wet tent in this weather but we're down with Telluride for now.

And I am reminded again why I love the dry desert of home.
